One of the major differences between Hindhead Music Centre and other music schools is that the range of tuition services offered is not limited to children. It is never too late to start to learn to play an instrument, or to re-learn an instrument which you started to learn many years ago.  We have teachers for all ages and abilities, from pre-school to pensioners, and currently teach students at all levels from absolute beginners to post-graduate players.  The music centre is open in the evenings during the week, and so caters for those who are in full-time employment.

The Centre does not limit itself to classical music, and has a healthy number of students learning to play folk, rock and blues guitar, as well as drums, electric bass and keyboards in a variety of modern styles.  Jazz enthusiasts are catered for, in that as well as instruments such as piano, drums and saxophone being taught in jazz styles, there is also a Jazz Club for performers.

Many of the students who have passed through the Music Centre over the years have commented on how they have benefitted from the unique family atmosphere here, and how their time here has changed their lives.  Several have been close to breakdown through personal tragedy, but felt saved by their involvement in making music.  Many have gone on to make careers of music from the tuition, and many more have reached a potential far beyond their expectation, and therefore feel a sense of satisfaction and achievement.

Just as for children, the issues of playing in a group situation are extremely beneficial, and we have many groups specifically for adult learners in a relaxed, social environment where enthusiasm is the only requirement.  In addition to the performance groups, we also have regular Musical Appreciation talks, recitals and concerts. Admission to these is free of charge to pupils who take individual tuition for at least 30 minutes weekly during term time.

LSO - The Late Starters Orchestra !

The Late Starters Orchestra meets weekly during term time on a Tuesday evening, and is an excellent social event for adult learners between (approximately) grades one and five on an orchestral instrument.  The emphasis is on a relaxed, lively social environment rather than strict musical competence, and a good time is had by all.

Guitar Club

The Guitar Club meets on Monday evenings, with separate groups for elementary, intermediate and advanced players. Come and enjoy ensemble playing with others of similar ability !

The Jazz Club

The Jazz Club meets on Saturday afternoons and is for jazz performers of all abilities. Contact us for more details.

Recorder Consorts

All adult recorder players are invited to join the Hindhead Recorder Consorts.  The consorts have been running for several years now, but are always on the look out for new players. Sessions take place on Thursday evenings during term time.

Music Appreciation Talks

A series of weekly informal talks, accompanied by recordings, intended for the person who enjoys listening to classical music and is interested in finding out more about it.   Click here for more details

Pianists' Evenings

If you play the piano, you are invited to our Pianist's Evening. These are informal gatherings of pianists (adults only) and occur about once a term.  We meet in the concert hall for a glass or two of wine and a chance to meet and hear others of similar ability.  You don't have to play, although of course if you would like to you would be very welcome.  Do bring along some music just in case you feel inspired ! There is no charge for these events, even the wine is free.
